We are all either Frodo or Gollum, and which we are depends upon how we carry the burden. Either we carry it so as to be eventually rid of it, or we treasure it so as to be enslaved (and eventually destroyed) by it. Either we receive the help of friends and family in our quest, or we isolate ourselves, crawling into the deep places of the earth away from kith and kin, gnawing away at our own souls. It’s easy to forget, maybe, that Gollum was once Sméagol: basically a hobbit. The difference between him and Frodo amounted to how each carried the burden.
